I just need explanations on how to get an answer for these..?

okay, I am taking Introductory algebra and I have a few problems that I can't figure out how to even start, where to go or How to look it up, They are word problems as well, So not only can i not figure out what to do for them but I don't even know how to set them up. I am looking for someone who can help me with each problem on just the set up, and an answer. I want to be able to work through the problem with the equation set up, and look at the answer for reference to see if it is correct, if you would like to add the extra work I wouldn't mind. Please, and thank you.

1) Two angles are supplementary. The measure of the larger angle is 12 less that five times the smaller. Find the measure of the smaller angle, and express your answer using the appropriate units. ( I need to know how this is set up for example is this going to be 5x - 12 = 180? or is it another form, I am really bad at reading word problems)

2) Percentiles: 2. When investing $5,600, a financial planner put some of the money into a savings account paying 3% annual interest. The rest of the money was invested in a Certificate of Deposit paying 4.5% annual interest. The combined interest earned for the year was $207. How much money was invested in the Certificate of Deposit?

3) An airplane can fly with the wind a distance of 720 miles in 4 hours. However, against the wind the return trip takes 5 hours. Find the speed of the airplane in still air and the speed of the wind.

4) At an IMAX theartre, the giant rectangular screen has a width 36 feet less than its length. If the perimeter of the screen is 332 feet, find the length and width of the screen

5. On Saturday afternoon, general admission to the theatre is $8.00 and senior citizen admission is $5.50. Receipts for a recent showing totaled $1,375.50 for an audience of 186 people. How many senior citizens attended the movie?

6. Chuck invested part of $6,000 in a 3% passbook account, and the remainder in a 5% certificate of deposit. The total annual interest from both accounts was $246. How much did he invest in each account?

7. A company has two molds to form tires. One mold has a setup cost of $1100 and the cost to make each tire is $15. The second mold has a setup cost of $3500 and the cost to make each tire is $10. Determine the number of tires produced when the costs are equal.

Also, If you would like to just go over this with me through yahoo chat / msn messenger I am available at bubbles_pop_when_u_poke_em@yahoo.com or baby_orange_skiddle@hotmail.com

Please and Thank you for taking the time to read this.|||For each of these problems, you need to start by assigning one or more unkowns. This means picking a variable name (let's say "X") and supposing that one of the quantities in the problem is equal to this "unknown variable." Now you turn the problem into a set of equations using your variable, and solve the equations to discover the actual value.

So lets look at each problem:

1) Two angles are supplementary. The measure of the larger angle is 12 less that five times the smaller. Find the measure of the smaller angle, and express your answer using the appropriate units.

For this one, lets assume the smaller angle is x. Then, just as you say, the larger angle is 5x - 12. But since they are supplementary, you are saying that *both* angles add to 180 degrees, so:

x + (5x - 12) = 180

6x - 12 = 180

6x = 192

x = 32

5x - 12 = 148

The angles are 32 and 148, and these do, indeed, add to 180. You got the "5x-12" right but did not set the equation up right.

Lets say x = amount in a CD

Then we can say:

5600 - x = amount in savings account (from the first phrase: "When investing $5,600...")

(5600 - x) * .03 = interest earned in savings ("...savings account paying 3%...)

x * .045 = interest earned in CD ("...Certificate of Deposit paying 4.5%...")

(5600 - x) * .03 + x * .045 = 207 ("...combined interest earned for the year was $207...")

Now if you solve for x, you get the CD amount directly.

(5600 - x) * .03 + x * .045 = 207

168 - .03x + .045x = 207

.015x = 39

x = $2,600 invested in the CD, so $3,000 was put into the savings account.

3) An airplane can fly with the wind a distance of 720 miles in 4 hours. However, against the wind the return trip takes 5 hours. Find the speed of the airplane in still air and the speed of the wind.

x = speed in still air

w = wind speed

(x+w) * 4 = 720 (outbound trip with the wind)

(x-w) * 5 = 720 (return trip against the wind)

x + w = 180 (outbound)

x - w = 144 (return)

add 2w to each side of the second equation to get:

x + w = 144 + 2w

180 = 144 + 2w (combine the two equations)

w = 18 mph

x = 162 mph

Do the others the same way.
