Balance enquiry at cashpoint - whats the difference between top and bottom balance?

Go to a cashpoint, ask for on screen balance,


It gives me two different sums:


For example, I have 拢60 on the top, yet my 'available balance' would be 拢6


Why can't I withdraw the whole 拢60, if I appear to have it?? (didn't use my card all day until then)|||When you have used your card at a shop or on the telephone, the bank have to authorise that payment, so we tell the shop or wherever your purchasing the product that you actually have the funds in your account. So for example if you went to tesco and bought something for 拢54 on your card, then walked outside to the ATM and got a balance. Your balance would show as 拢60 however we've deducted the 拢54 you have just spent, because you no longer have it. Its currently in the pipeline and thats tescos money whenever they decide to take it out. Sometimes its a few days sometimes its the same day. It depends on when that company decides to take it. Same applies if you put a cheque into your account. The cheque will show in the balance at the top however it will take 3 working days for it to show in your available balance. Your available balance is what you currently have available to spend or withdraw.|||because if its a debit card it takes 3 days to show on your balance or you have direct debits that r due to *** out|||The 拢60 is the current balance in the bank before any allocated money. So the 拢6 is what you can draw out as the other 拢54 has been allocated either for direct debits, standing orders or things purchased but not cleared from your account.


Ja.|||the top shows what you have in your bank the bottom shows how much of the top you have left as there might be dd or card payments to go out its best to only use the bottom to find out how much you have to spend|||its where the bank has processed payments that have not yet come out your account they would be pending.





basically you couldve bought something 5 days ago , the shop didnt present it to the bank until end of week, but it was spent that day so it has been taken from you account available balance, thats why your avaialble balance is 拢6
